The World of Rodgers & Hammerstein is a spectacular, romantic concert containing over twenty of their wonderful songs. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein were the most popular writers of their day. From 1941 to 1959 they wrote five of the most successful musicals ever produced – Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King & I and The Sound of Music. Had their collaboration produced only one of these they would still have been celebrated as the most successful creators of musical theatre the world has known.
This concert features four West End soloists and contains all the most famous songs from the five great enduring musicals including The Sound of Music, My Favourite Things, Edelweiss, Climb Every Mountain, Oklahoma, Surrey with the Fringe on Top, You’ll Never Walk Alone, If I Loved You, June is Bustin’ Out All Over, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali Hai’, I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy, Shall we Dance as well as four great orchestral pieces.
As well as perfectly capturing the wholesome American aspects of real life, Hammerstein allows us through his brilliant lyrics to see that even the less attractive side of human nature needs to be understood. Oscar Hammerstein’s lyrics mine the emotional and spiritual depth of his characters while Richard Rodgers’ truly great and symphonic music matches those words with perfection.
