West End International produced South Pacific at Symphony Hall, Birmingham with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for a BBC Radio 2 broadcast. Starring Alan Opie, Kim Medcalf, Les Dennis and Maria Ewing, the performance was directed by Stewart Nicholls and conducted by Martin Yates.
With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the book is based on two short stories by James A Michener from his Tales of the South Pacific. It is generally considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time with several of its songs worldwide standards, including Bali Ha’i, Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime and I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy.
This concert requires a cast of 30 and small orchestra.
